Facebook is Removing the Story Section of Pages

For years Facebook has had an artifact of their older “Notes” application for Pages languishing around the feed of Pages called the “Story” section or “Our Story” section.

Social Media marketers and Facebook managers have used this section to explain why visitors should like or follow their page, SEOs have recommended adding keywords to the section to try and help the Facebook page rank for brand names as part of online reputation management, and local businesses have used it to explain why their small businesses deserves your attention and patronage. None of these uses have ever proven especially valuable and most marketers for the past few years have only added content to the story section as part of a checklist of items for standard optimization.

As of February 28, 2021 this section will be completely removed by Facebook. Most likely this is due to the new Facebook design we’ve all now been forced to adopt or possibly Facebook wants to use that section for ads or something else to distract your visitors. Ironically, the message Facebook has posted notifying Page managers of this important but not-too-consequential change is only visible on Business Manager versions of a Page which look more like the old design. That also means if you’ve only been posting via the app or main site version, you might have missed this notice.

Facebook is recommending that if you find the information placed here important for your fans/customers then you should add it to the “Additional Information” section of your Page instead.

This can be found under Settings -> Page Info at the top under the heading “General” or all the way at the bottom of the page as the last option. This section only allows a maximum of 10,000 characters, the previous “Story” section or “Our Story” didn’t have a specifically defined character limit.

This will move the information to the second information icon in the “About” section of your page viewed now on the left-hand side of your feed by visitors on desktop devices and in the “About” section of mobile devices.

The “Story” section content for a page moved to the Additional Information section moves it to the About section as the second information point after the Page’s description as seen here in this example screenshot.

You may also notice that the image added to your “Story” or “Our Story” has already been removed, we are not certain why that happend but the Additional Information section doesn’t allow for an image, so this should’be be a big concern. You also won’t be able to style this section or add a heading as you were able to do with the “Story” section previously.

It should also be noted that this change should occur late in the evening or on a weekend as Facebook turns each change in to a public post which your followers will engage with and which will be used by the News Feed algorithm to help later determine the quality of your content and how many users see your content. If you don’t find this information specifically useful or interesting to your followers or to your target audience, then ignore this message and allow Facebook to erase it so you don’t mess up your News Feed reach for no reason.
