UPDATE: Reddit employee MyNameIzKhan has stated that targeting by city or region should be live next week along with the auctions in this thread.
Reddit recently made a few changes to their advertising platform that made it a better experience. You can now target an “interest group” whereas before you could only target the front page or a specific sub-reddit. Here’s a full list of Reddit Ads Audience Groups:
- Reddit Front Page
- Art and Design
- Automotive
- College
- Entertainment
- Food and Drink
- Gaming
- Gift Cards & Deals
- Men’s Lifestyle
- News and Current Affairs
- Pets
- Politics
- Shopping and Fashion
- Sports and Fitness
- Technology
- Travel
- Trending Topics
- Women’s Lifestyle
- After Dark
The improvements don’t stop there. While the inventory management system is still clunky and difficult to use, if you select a wide enough date range while targeting a sub-reddit the system will at least let you know what date ranges are available and how much inventory you can snag.
But wait, that’s not all. Long the pariah of social media advertising circles because of how difficult the inventory management system has been, on February 8th Reddit will be launching an auction based ads system. This means no longer will you pay a flat rate for low volume sub-reddits the same as the front page but that costs will fluctuate with demand. There will be a base cost of $0.75 CPM. This will also eliminate the first-come, first-serve format which means marketers can now plan out campaigns on Reddit in shorter time frames.
