Search Engine
noun
Any information retrieval system that uses software to gather data from documents on the internet, adds that information to a database, develops an algorithm to rank that information for specific queries, and matches a users query input to documents found on the web.
Examples: Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing, Naver, Yandex, Baidu
“I use a search engine to find almost everything on the internet first.”
Important note: In our definition we’ve defined a ‘search engine’ as being one that crawls the entire open web (or as much as it can). This excludes search utilities on websites like YouTube, Facebook, and Amazon which only search their own websites for matching content.
